FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do spinal cord injuries usually occur

A spinal cord injury can cause widespread and sustained inflammation that leads to progressive loss of nerve cells, with associated functional problems. A traumatic spinal cord injury can happen because of a sudden blow or cut to the spine. Spinal cord injuries occur as a result of an unpredictable accident or violence. • A violent attack such as a stabbing or gunshot • Diving into the water that is too shallow • Trauma during an RTA especially to the chest, back, neck, face, etc. • Falling from a height • Trauma during sports injuries • Electrical accidents • Severe twisting of the middle portion

• Don’t try to move the person or disturb them unless its necessary{repositioning of the patient or trying to remove helmet etc} • Ask the patient to stay still even though they are capable of moving by there own • If the patient is not breathing, perform CPR

Spinal injuries are often due to unpredictable events. So all we can do is to reduce the risk of occurrence by • Wearing a seat belt in a car • Not wearing proper protective measures while playing sports • Never diving in shallow water • Using helmets in two wheelers.

• Some may be able to live a full and productive life after a spinal cord injury, but in some severe cases people will need assistive devices such as walkers or wheelchairs for the loss of mobility

• Spinal cords branch off from either side of the spinal column and exit between a pair of vertebrae to innervate the specific part of the body. • The area of the skin innervated by a specific spinal nerve is called the dermatome and the group of the muscle innervated by the spinal nerve is called myotomes. • A systematic assessment of the dermatomes and myotomes will allow the clinician to determine the affected segments.
