Overweight and obesity is the excessive accumulation of fat that presents a risk to health. Obesity is not just a matter of cosmetic concern but a precursor to many of the diseases related to heart, kidney, liver, type 2 diabetes, depression and arthritis problems. It is purely a metabolic disorder the lipid metabolism is altered and the amount of calories intake exceeds the amount of calories burnt. BMI is a crude population measure of obesity for adults which is calculated by weight in kilogram divided by height in meter square. People is considered as obese if the BMI exceeds 30kg/m² and is considered as overweight if BMI is between 25-30 kg/m². BMI less than 18.5 kg/m² is considered as underweight. BMI between 18.5-24.9 kg/m² is considered as normal weight.

In Ayurveda obesity is mentioned as sthaulya. In ayurveda this context is described under santarpanotha vikara {disease due to overnourishment}. The excessive fat is stored in the form of lipids in the adipose tissues.
Samprapti of sthaulya
In ayurveda it is considered as a lifestyle disorder due to apathyahara and vihara. Due to this unhealthy regimen of ahara, vihara or manasika, it increases kapha dosha and it disturbs the agni. Since the agni is disturbed food remains turn to ama and they get converted into madhura avastha paka. This ama circulating all over the body produces medas because of unctuousness and gets converted to sthaulya.
Ayurveda for obesity
Among the shad upakram langhana and rukshanam are the key treatment principles adopted. Internally herbal preparations which possess guru and apatarpana property are used. Guru dravya helps in treatment of agni drugs with apatarpana property reduces excess meda.
Samshodhana is advisable treatment either as virechana or vamana as obesity is considered as bahu dosha and expulsion of excess dosha is the key. It is highly recommended treatment for those with stamina and strength.
