Diabetes mellitus which is otherwise called diabetes is a lifestyle disorder which is caused by high glucose in the bloodstream. Type 1 Diabetes
This is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the insulin producing ß cells of the pancreas and interrupts the insulin synthesis.
Type 2 Diabetes
In this type the body becomes resistant to insulin which is produced by the ß cells of the islets of Langerhans.
Here the blood sugar will be higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.
This is diabetes during the gestational period. The insulin blocking hormones produced by the placenta causes this condition.

In ayurveda diabetes is called as prameha and is categorised as sadhya vyadhi. It is of mainly 20 types 10 types kaphaja, 6 types pithaja and 4 types vataja. Of these diabetes mellitus comes under kaphaja vyadhi and is called madhumeha.
The symptoms are similar like prabhootha aavila moothratha which means increased frequency, quantity and frothy urine.
Nava prameha is sukha sadhya as per ayurveda and drugs like hareetaki, amalaki are used as single drugs. Triphala which includes above said drugs with bibhitaki is also used as a treatment.
Decoctions made of above said drugs like pathya shadangam, pathya akha dhatriyadi, nisha kathakadi etc are mainly given as internal medicines. Medicines which improve metabolism are also given.
