What is Eczema?
Eczema is an immune mediated inflammation of the skin arising as a result of an interaction between genetic and environmental factors. It is derived from the Greek term “ekzein” which means to boil over. Dermatitis is a common term that is used interchangeably and depicts inflammation of the epidermal layer of skin. In Ayurveda Eczema is correlated to Vicharchika.
What are the symptoms of Eczema?
In acute cases, eczema appears as erythematous macules on the skin, that may go on to enlarge and become papules. Gradually it becomes a vesicle that oozes pus. Following this crust formation occurs which begins scaling and flakes away to heal.
In chronic cases, there will be less exudation but more lichenification, scaling and fissuring on the surface.
