ABHYANGA

Abhyanga which is also called oil massage is a form of ayurvedic treatment which includes massage of the body with warm herb infused medicated oils. It is a part of dinacharya { daily regimen}  as per ayurvedic textbooks to maintain good health and wellbeing.

Massage is not a new concept and almost every culture has employed massage including Romans, Japanese, Chinese, Greeks, Indians. But the most scientific and oldest scripture is from ayurveda which is the traditional medicine system practised in India which advocates abhyanga daily as a part of dinacharya. 

It is a systemic rubbing and manipulation of the body to prevent stiffness, promotes circulation and to promote good health. The health benefits of abhyanga are innumerable

Importance of abhyanga

  • Just like the tender leaves of a tree grow on by absorption of water, the bodily tissues grow and develop due to abhyanga.
  • It should be practiced daily on head, ears, feet.
  • If the roots of the tree are watered regularly, it lives for a long time, likewise if abhyanga is practiced regularly it promotes longevity.

 

Abhyanga as a treatment

Abhyanga can be done as a purvakarma { pre-treatment} or as a full session of treatment alone.  It requires two paricharak working in sync.

  • It should be avoided when suffering from aggravation of kapha 
  • Who is suffering from indigestion
  • Patient suffering from fever
  • Ama condition

 

Shiroabhyanga and Padabhyanga

  Abhyanga is not complete and comprehensive unless had massage and foot massage are incorporated in it. 

Shiroabhyanga is a type of murdhini taila {various methods of application of oil over head} and is a soothing ayurvedic treatment which helps to heal a plethora of health conditions.

UDWARTHANAM

Udwarthanam can be explained as a special therapeutic deep tissue massage using herbal powders.  Udwarthanam literally  means to elevate or to promote. This massage involves only upward stroking, where the powder is rubbed forcibly on the body against the direction of hair growth. Classical treatises on Ayurveda explain this procedure as a daily routine.

UDGARSHANAM

Udgharshanam includes application of wet drugs which are gently massaged through the body, allowed to settle and then removed. It helps in breaking the cellulite in the body especially those present in the buttocks, thighs, hips and stomach and helps in strengthening the muscles.

This ayurveda therapy is similar to udwarthanam, it heats up the body thus breaking cellulite and tones up the skin thereby reducing body weight. This is used as combined treatment along with abhyanga in a weight loss program along with udwarthanam. It is beneficial in skin disorders like eczema.

LEPANA

DHARA

A thin steady stream of warm medicine is allowed to fall directly on the forehead of the patient who lies steady with ears and eyes closed.

Sarvangadhara also called kayaseka or pizhichil is a special treatment procedure in which the whole body is bathed with streams of herbal oils or decoctions with simultaneous soft massage. This treatment was done and offered only to the king and only to royal family and so often it is nicknamed as ‘treatment for aristocrats’.

Dhanyamla Dhara

Dhanyamla dhara is considered as a special treatment in ayurveda that treats various inflammatory diseases and vata disorders. It is very beneficial in eradicating various metabolic waste products that get stored in the body which is called ama.

Dhanyamla is a fermented liquid that is made from cereals and medicinal herbs. The whole process includes pouring this liquid from a certain height, temperature and rhythm.

Leaves used in elakizhi include leaves of eranda, chincha, nirgundi,  etc which are vatahara.

NETHRA DHARA/SEKA

Nethra dhara also called as nethra prakshalana is a relaxing procedure of eyes which is done by flowing luke warm herbal decoctions from medial canthus to lateral canthus of eyes. This helps in removing the debris and clarifies vision.

SHIRO VASTI

Shirovasti is a panchakarma procedure where lukewarm medicated oil is retained in the head for a particular period of time. This treatment is very beneficial in paralysis, insomnia, and some of the psychosomatic disorders.

Kati vasti

It is a special type of treatment for the lumbar region using warm medicated oils that is retained in the area for a particular period of time. It is a deep tissue therapy using heat which heals and repairs the tissue.
